The Last Straw

3-25-26 — You know the parable of the straw that broke the camel’s back: an ordinarily minor thing proves the breaking point in a prolonged and difficult effort. It’s an apt one for so many of the requests we receive. An older person on a fixed income finally receives subsidized housing, only to learn they must purchase a new refrigerator. The breadwinner in a family struggling financially has an accident and cannot work. There are many similar stories.

Just recently, we received a request to help a single mother who has overcome homelessness, completed specialized training, and accepted a new job offer…only to find the uniforms required cost hundreds of dollars. Dollars she simply didn’t have. The Samaritans did. Once again, your contribution funded a comparatively small request that made a huge difference in someone’s life. Never doubt that your contribution of any size goes unremarked or unappreciated.

Thank you for helping us once again keep the last straw off the back of a Salem neighbor in need.

A Timely Donation!
The Samaritans have just been awarded a $5,000 grant from the Essex County Community Fund! At a time when so many face seemingly insurmountable financial crises, we are grateful for the support of the ECCF and the ability these funds will give us to help even more people in need.
