Too many of our Salem neighbors live just minutes away from us, but in a very different world. In their world, it is a struggle to keep the heat on, their children clothed, their car running. Over 300 children in our schools are officially homeless; nearly half of our city’s children depend on school breakfast and lunch programs as their main source of nutrition. More than 5,000 people in Salem live in this world, officially below the poverty line.
